 No one killed in Puntland operations, Range insists

Things are going well or terribly - it all depends on who you ask. Jamie Freed reports. THE news out of Puntland, a semi-autonomous state of Somalia, has not been good since Range Resources began exploring for minerals and petroleum in late February. If Somali sources are to be believed, about 10 people have died in a clash between soldiers loyal to Puntland’s president and a regional clan opposed to the Australian company’s exploration project.

A discussion on Baidoa town security attended by the three top officials of Somali transitional federal government and members of the local Digil and Mirifle clans has taken place in the town on Thursday. The meeting which lasted for several hours and attended by Somali president Abdulahi Yusuf, premier Ali Gedi, speaker of parliament Sharif Hassan Sheik Adan and other members of Digil and Mirifle tribes was to focus on the insecurity in the town which has worsened for the past days.

DOBLEY, 11 April (IRIN) - Zara Ali Muki lost her leg in 2004, when freelance militia fired on a vehicle she was riding in in Mogadishu, Somalia. Her life was in danger once again at the end of March, when she was forced to flee the latest factional fighting in the capital city. With the help of friends and relatives, she escaped in a van to Dhobley, a small town on the Somali- Kenyan border.

Somalia has decided to re-open its Ethiopian embassy after rising political tension resulted in its closure in 1991.

In response to the move, Seyoum Mesfin, Ethiopia’s foreign minister, said Ethiopia would soon open an embassy in Somalia in an effort to support the war-torn country.
